Simple Praise for Thanksgiving

wheat-field-harvest-sunset

I love this time of the year.  It’s a season for gratefulness.  It’s a season for giving gratitude for the harvest of thought, action and progress manifested in our lives!

One of my favorite songs in my sacred repertoire, “Simple Praise,” is one that I performed many times in church as well as recorded on my “Story For The Ages” CD.  It seems absolutely fitting to share with you now.

Just click the link below and listen to my full recording of “Simple Praise” by Craig Courtney and Pamela Martin.

Back to the Future at TMC!

Julia at TMC in Boston

A return to a spiritual/musical home in my life!

Recently, I had the great privilege of attending the morning service on Sunday at The First Church of Christ, Scientist – also known as The Mother Church (TMC). It’s the worldwide headquarters of the Christian Science church where I served as the Soloist for 7 years.

It’s been 4 years since I took my last turn as Soloist at TMC, and it was a joy to return and be a part of the congregation.

While there, I felt the past, present and future all combined in one. The past: feeling the foundation of this church!, wonderful memories, being back in this grand place, and seeing friends and colleagues. The present: experiencing the perpetually holy and healing service in full bloom as a congregation member. The future: Sitting with a congregation of new faces which included new Readers about to begin their tenure! (more…)

Spring Renewal: A Walk In The Snow

Spring 2016b

I love the renewal that comes with each season.  I especially love the sense of rebirth when Spring starts to show her beautiful self to us each year.

Renewal always signifies to me the opportunity to start fresh, get a clean slate, do some “spring” cleaning, and clear out all of the cobwebs.

This line of thought always leads me to thinking about life here on earth and its continuous cycle of change as expressed in nature.  That, of course, leads me further into more spiritual realms until finally, it makes me stand still and face the concept of life or … Life with a capital “L”.

So … Life.  (more…)

The Women of “Duets – Woman 2 Woman”

Duets_500px

Over the course of 2 years, I was privileged to spend time working and recording with 8 amazing women to create my new CD, Duets — Woman 2 Woman — Conversations With Wise Women In My Life.

The CD was just released not quite 2 weeks ago, and I’m thrilled to share its treasures with you, namely, the women of Duets: (clockwise from top right) Georgia Engel, Jan Horvath, Margaret Imrie, Gwen Eagleton, Margaret Dorn, Emily Bindiger, Cynthia Clawson, Jenny Burton)

Social Media — How It’s Working in My Life

social-media-image

I subscribe to Social Media Examiner — a blog I have been following for about a year.  I also recently joined their Social Media Marketing Society in an effort to learn more about Social Media and its changes and updates.  In the Meet and Greet section, we are asked to introduce ourselves.  I did, and the moderator came back and asked me how I was using Social Media in my concert and recording career.

It was a really powerful experience to put into words what I have been doing and why.  I am sure my answer was far too long for the moderator, but it wasn’t for me.  It was a real stream-of-consciousness brainstorm to review what I and my company, Watchfire Music, have been engaged in now for quite a while.  Seems appropriate to share some of this insight here with you, too.  After all, we spend most of our time together communicating through some form of digital communication (my other term for Social Media!). About Solo Thoughts

solo thoughts 3rd qtr ba

Do you know about Solo Thoughts?

It’s a great research tool to help church soloists, musical directors and music committees to find music appropriate to church services — particularly songs for the soloist.  It’s called Solo Thoughts and Watchfire Music publishes this quarterly and monthly.  We’ve been doing this now for about 8 years.

If you are new to Solo Thoughts, here are more specifics: Solo Thoughts matches 12 to 24 solos per week to each Christian Science Weekly Bible Lesson.  It also provides a purchase link to buy in-print sheet music for your church service.  This is a very detailed document that cuts your own research time down as well as introducing you to new sacred solo repertoire.
